Introduction
This is a website about photographing small animals, insects, spiders, and the like. It’s something I enjoy, and I hope to share some of the things I’ve learned over the years. There are lots of sites and books about macro photography, the photography of small things. Most of them assume that your subject is either inert, such as jewlrey, or at least inanimate, such as flowers. I'm more interested in living animate subjects: organisms that walk, jump, fliy, or burrow in the earth; insects, centipedes, small reptiles and amphibians, etc.. These subjects bring a whole new set of problems Right now, this site is a work in progress. There’s a lot of outline, but not a lot of content yet. I’ll be adding new sections from time to time., and improving old ones The core content will be photographs accompanied by a discussion of how they were made. What were the choices of equipment, lighting, and setting? Why were those choices made? What might have been done better? I want to show how good photographs can be made even with relatively inexpensive equipment, and what additional capabilities more advanced equipment can provide. In addition, I’ll be adding technical sections on topics like magnification, depth-of-field, lighting, and others. I’ve had a lot of fun photographing small critters. I hope this website helps you do the same.
